Two-year-old Paige Hart is healing from six broken bones after a head-on collision last week on an Alaska highway killed her parents. Alaska State Troopers said the Oct. 19 crash near Trapper Creek on the Parks Highway killed Sasha Hart, 38, and David Hart, 41, both of Fairbanks.
Troopers said Sasha Hart was driving a Subaru Forester south when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound Ford F-250. Paige was riding in the Subaru and survived. The family said she is recovering quickly.
The Harts had just marked 10 years of marriage and built their life in Fairbanks, where Sasha's Jamaican background and David's Alaskan upbringing blended, according to relatives. Shery Elterman-Hart, David's sister, said the couple enjoyed travel, hockey and food, and that being parents came first.
She held her niece during an interview. "She's a miracle. Aren't you?" Elterman-Hart said.
Katie Ragsdale, another of David's sisters, said their daughter was central to their lives. "She was their entire world," Ragsdale said. "I don't know if it's Paige's house or their house." Relatives said Paige carries traits of both parents, including her mother's expression and her father's sweet tooth. "You still have a piece of them, a living piece of them still on Earth," Ragsdale said.
