Cook County Crime Stoppers has put a $1,000 reward on the line for information that leads to the arrest of the driver responsible for the death of a 32-year-old Chicago mother. The reward comes just hours after Rosa Hernandez Rivera died at her residence on Thursday morning, ending a two-week battle for her life.
Rivera sustained a gunshot wound to the head on Oct. 22 near West 47th Street and South Western Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood. She was driving a minivan with her boyfriend and two of her five children when an unidentified driver pulled alongside their vehicle and opened fire around 9:30 a.m.
Business surveillance video from the block shows the incident. The footage captures the minivan being followed closely by another vehicle. Raymond Lopez, the 15th Ward alderman, stated that the suspect appeared enraged by an event that occurred several blocks prior to the shooting.
The family is grappling with the loss. Sonia Hernandez, Rivera's sister, said the children are dealing with the trauma in different ways. "They're very traumatized about the situation. The same as all the family. We're still in shock," Hernandez said. She added that the family had been praying for a miracle during Rivera's hospitalization.
Rivera is remembered by her relatives as a devoted mother. "She loved her kids. Worked for them," Hernandez said. Her sister noted that Rivera had a chance to say goodbye the day before she passed away.
Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. As of Thursday night, no suspect has been taken into custody. Hernandez urged the responsible party to turn themselves in, warning that the next victim could be someone else.
The family continues to mourn as the investigation proceeds.
