Russell Brand entered the witness box at Southwark Crown Court in London on Wednesday to formally deny the sexual offenses charged against him. He appeared as the first witness for the defense, a strategic choice made by his legal team after no other supporters came forward. His lawyer, Ian Winter KC, asked Brand directly if he had committed the acts described in the indictment. Brand answered no to each specific question regarding the alleged conduct.

During cross-examination, Winter asked Brand about his career trajectory. Brand noted that his marriage to pop star Katy Perry in 2010 resulted in what he described as staggering fame. He then addressed the absence of supporting testimony. Brand stated that he spent considerable time seeking witnesses who could speak to his character or the events in question. He told the court that not a single person with relevant information agreed to testify on his behalf.

Brand described the impact of the legal proceedings on his personal life. He said his entire life has been consumed by these allegations. He added that he has devoted himself to these matters for an extended period. The judge presiding over the case, Mr Justice Bennathan, had previously reduced one of the seven original charges. On Tuesday, he changed a count of indecent assault to attempted indecent assault. The judge told the jury there was insufficient evidence regarding a specific incident from 2001 involving an employee at MTV.

The prosecution spent the previous two weeks outlining its case against Brand. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC described Brand as ruthless and calculated. She characterized his desire for sexual contact as indiscriminate and voracious. The case involves six women who are granted automatic lifelong anonymity under U.K. law. The alleged incidents span a decade, from 1999 to 2009. The charges include three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. Brand has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The accusations cover specific locations and dates. One complaint alleges a rape occurred at the 1999 Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. Another involves a 2001 incident at MTV where the woman claims Brand grabbed her and tried to pull her into a toilet. A third allegation points to a 2004 party in Soho where she says he squeezed her breasts and orally raped her in a restroom. A fourth claim involves an incident at Capital Radio between 2004 and 2005. The prosecution stated he pushed a woman against a wall and kissed her aggressively while grabbing her body. The final two allegations involve incidents in 2009, including a claim of anal rape following consensual vaginal sex and a demand for a massage during a work assignment.

Brand spoke to reporters outside the court on Wednesday. He said he was grateful that the day was a day for truth and justice. He noted that the legal system was able to accommodate the process. The trial is scheduled to continue on Thursday, with the defense expected to call further evidence or close its case depending on the court's schedule.
