Thirteen hours after a man took a 10-year-old girl from her apartment, tactical teams from the U.S. Marshals Service rescued her from a home in Oregon City, Oregon. The girl was found tied up in a closet and immediately transported to a hospital.
Police reports indicate the incident began at 1:39 a.m. on Wednesday when the man entered an apartment in Canby. He injured a 12-year-old child, who was rushed to the hospital and remained under care as of Wednesday afternoon. The 10-year-old, a student at Carus Elementary, was taken during the same event.
Vince Edgar Chavez, the suspect, attempted to flee through the back of the residence but was captured by marshals. Authorities stated that the parents are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Residents questioned why an Amber Alert was not activated when the child was first reported missing. The Canby Police Department responded by saying it had not yet collected the specific information required to issue such an alert.
School officials increased the police presence at Carus Elementary during Wednesday’s afternoon dismissal. The district noted this step was taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure safety.
The school district released a statement saying their hearts are with the child and her family. They added that staff are ready to support students and families in whatever ways they can.
The next steps involve the continued treatment of the 12-year-old and the formal processing of Chavez by law enforcement.
