Work has begun on the eight-story building at 436 Ena Road in Waikiki.
On Friday, Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Department of Housing and Land Management Director Kevin Auger, and Department of Community Services Director Anton Krucky joined project partners for a ceremonial event. They demonstrated the remotely operated demolition robots that will handle the structural breakdown. The machines, manufactured by Sweden-based Husqvarna, allow operators to dismantle confined structures from a safer distance.
The demolition contractor, R.H.S. Lee, Inc., will begin structural demolition the week of November 2. This phase follows months of preparatory work, including environmental abatement, permitting, and scaffold installation. The robots will operate during standard construction hours while safety fencing remains in place.
The city acquired the property in 2018 using federal Community Development Block Grant funds. The site, which includes the vacant eight-story building and a detached parking structure, totals approximately 6,000 square feet. It was previously the city's first Waikiki housing project to accept Housing First vouchers.
Demolition and site clearing are expected to continue through February 2027. Mayor Blangiardi stated that the city is taking a property that has served the community and investing in its future. He emphasized the need for long-term commitments to preserve affordable housing across Oahu, particularly in Waikiki where housing is increasingly out of reach for local families.
DHLM Director Kevin Auger noted that demolition is an important milestone, but the focus remains on the subsequent development. The goal is to create a high-quality development that maximizes long-term affordability and delivers lasting value to the Waikiki community.
The final unit count and affordability levels will be determined as the development plan and financing structure are finalized. The project will undergo community engagement, environmental review, and applicable land use approvals as redevelopment advances.
