The Democratic majority in the House now positions Rep. Rosa DeLauro to lead the Appropriations Committee, the panel that controls federal spending.

This outcome follows a series of election results on November 4, 2026, that expanded the party's control over several districts in Michigan, Texas, California, and Washington. The shifts in these specific seats provide the numerical base required for the leadership change.

In Michigan, Democrats flipped three districts held by Republicans. In the 4th District, state Sen. Sean McCann defeated Rep. Bill Huizenga, who had won by 12 points in 2024. Christina Hines took the 10th District from Republican Michael Bouchard, a seat previously held by Rep. John James. William Lawrence defeated freshman Rep. Tom Barrett in the 7th District, which Barrett had won by four points in the prior cycle.

Washington state saw moderate Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez retain her third term in the 3rd District. She defeated Republican state Senate Minority Leader John Braun in a district that voted for President Donald Trump by three points in 2024.

Texas experienced a shift in the 9th District where Democrat Leticia Gutierrez defeated Republican Alex Mealer. This seat had been a target of the state's redistricting plan, which aimed to bolster Republican numbers after Rep. Al Green left the district to run for a different seat.

California saw changes in three districts following state Democratic redistricting. Adam Gray won reelection in the 13th District, where he had previously won by 187 votes. Progressive Democrat Randy Villegas defeated Rep. David Valadao in the 22nd District, a newly drawn seat with a large Hispanic population. Angela Gonzales-Torres defeated incumbent Democrat Jimmy Gomez in the 34th District, a primary win that occurred while Gomez faced an ethics investigation.

In New York, Reps. Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen retained their seats in the 3rd and 4th districts. Their victories against Republican challengers helped solidify the party's hold on those regional seats.
