The Atlanta Falcons lost their homecoming game on a rainy Sunday, falling 16-0 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. The defeat marked the Falcons' most lopsided loss of the season and left the team facing a critical week before their trip to Madrid.
The Buccaneers dominated the line of scrimmage, rushing for a franchise-record 324 yards. Bucky Irving carried the ball for a career-high 170 yards, while Kenneth Gainwell added a personal best of 140 yards. They became the second pair in franchise history to both rush for over 100 yards in a single game, following the 2000 duo of Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott.
The Falcons' offense struggled to find rhythm, converting zero of their 12 third-down attempts. Quarterback Michael Penix was intercepted four times, a rate of one pick every six pass attempts. This snapped a recent trend, as Penix had thrown only one interception in the previous month, a pick in his debut against Green Bay.
Penix acknowledged the difficulty of the performance to reporters after the final whistle. He noted that many family members were in the stands and that this was a level of play he had never experienced in his career. Despite the frustration, he expressed confidence that the team would recover quickly.
The Buccaneers' passing attack was nearly nonexistent, yet it was sufficient to secure the win. Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed zero passes, with his only attempt coming 90 seconds into the second half. According to ESPN and NFL research, no team has won a game with zero completed passes since 1974. No team has won by a double-digit margin with zero completions since 1945.
The Falcons' defense, which entered the contest ranked fourth in the NFL against the run, struggled to contain Tampa Bay's backs. The primary positive for Atlanta came from safety Jessie Bates III, who saved a touchdown in the first quarter with a diving interception. Bates described the first half as the craziest game he has been a part of.
The Falcons will travel to Madrid on Sunday to face the Cincinnati Bengals. Pass rusher James Pearce Jr. is expected to return from suspension for that matchup. The team will look to rebound from this performance before the international game.
In other local sports news, the Atlanta Braves have until 5 p.m. today to send qualifying offers to free agents such as Mauricio Dubon, Raisel Iglesias, and Tyler Mahle. The qualifying offer amount is set at $23.15 million. Dubon and Matt Olson also won Gold Glove awards on Sunday night.
