Housing and grocery costs continue to squeeze household budgets across the country. As of 2026, a single adult requires a minimum annual income of $80,000 to live comfortably in every state. The bar is higher in nearly half of the states, where the required income exceeds $100,000. For a household consisting of two working adults and two children, the financial threshold reaches as high as $329,000.

SmartAsset compiled these figures using data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator. The researchers adjusted the baseline living wage estimates using the 50/30/20 budgeting rule. Under this framework, 50% of income covers necessities like housing and utilities, 30% funds discretionary spending, and 20% is allocated for retirement and emergency savings. The final numbers represent the pre-tax annual income needed to meet these standards.

The cost of living has climbed in most jurisdictions since the last update. Montana recorded the largest year-over-year increase for a single adult, with the required income jumping 8.6%. New York followed with an 8.4% rise. California and Massachusetts also saw steep increases, climbing 6.1% and 5.9%, respectively. In contrast, six states saw the required income drop slightly compared to 2025. Tennessee posted the largest decline at 1.7%, followed by Maryland at 0.9%.

Massachusetts remains the most expensive state for a family of four, requiring an annual income of $329,555. For single adults, Hawaii is the costliest location, demanding $129,002. The financial burden is lighter in the South and West Virginia. Mississippi offers the lowest threshold for a family of four at $187,533, while West Virginia requires the least for a single adult at $81,245.

In 40 states, a family of four needs at least $200,000 per year to maintain this standard of living. The analysis covers all 50 states using data last updated by MIT in February 2026. The study compares these 2026 figures against 2025 data to calculate the annual changes. Source data providers are not affiliated with the study.

Tennessee, Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas are the only states where the income needed for a single adult has decreased. In these locations, residents need less money in 2026 than they did the previous year. The remaining 44 states require more income to cover basic needs.

California ranks fourth among the highest cost increases for single adults, with the required income now sitting at $126,797. New York's threshold for a single adult stands at $124,342. The data reflects the cost of covering minimum basic needs while adhering to the specified budgeting structure.
