DuVernay sees trouble in both election outcomes
The filmmaker behind '14th' argues the administration will react strongly regardless of which party controls Congress.

With two days remaining until Election Day, the U.S. midterm race is tightening around two specific outcomes. Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay told Variety last week that the political result will likely trigger a strong response from the White House no matter which party wins.
Speaking at the Airbnb.org Gala, DuVernay stated, 'I think either way we're in trouble.' She explained that if Democrats win, she expects an outsized reaction from the current administration. If Republicans hold their ground, she predicts a similar strong reaction from the White House.
DuVernay's documentary '14th' has gained traction in award season discussions. The film examines the 14th Amendment, which codifies birthright citizenship, due process, and equal protection under the law. The director said citizens need to understand their rights and the meaning of citizenship.
The Associated Press reported on October 30 that more than 43 million Americans have already cast ballots. RealClearPolling data shows Democrats leading Republicans by 8.2 percentage points in the national congressional ballot average. The current margin is 51.4 percent for Democrats and 43.2 percent for Republicans.
Polls suggest Democrats will likely regain control of the House of Representatives. Senate races remain too close to predict a definitive shift in that chamber. DuVernay said she has no lack of material for future documentaries and urged the public to keep pushing forward.
