A new music compilation addresses the tension between local artistic expression and the urgent need for immigrant support services in Kentucky. The album, titled Take It Back!, channels protest themes from the state's music scene to generate financial backing for a local non-profit.
La La Land, a recording studio in Louisville, released the project on bandcamp.com. The collection features thirteen original songs performed by thirteen different Kentucky artists. Proceeds from the release go directly to Kentucky Refugee Ministries. That organization provides resettlement, legal, and support services to refugees and other displaced individuals.
The studio stated that the project aims to amplify voices in solidarity with immigrants. It describes the music as a defense of human dignity. The tracks cover a range of genres, including folk, rock, hip-hop, punk, and bilingual Latin music. Subjects addressed in the lyrics include immigration raids, democracy, faith, climate, and community.
The participating artists include 10th Street Dre and The Ministry of Truth, Houseplant, Joe Clark, LOUIE V Edsel, and Mason Colby. Other contributors are mothbaby, Yapa!, Glenn Davis, Nick Teale, Precious Perez, StellAura, The Histrionics, and Hex Hex Hex. Every track was contributed specifically for this compilation.
Kentucky Refugee Ministries partners with faith-based organizations and other groups to help integrate displaced individuals into Kentucky communities. The studio noted that the release exercises the right to free speech. The album is currently available for listening and purchase on bandcamp.com.
