Sarah Michelle Gilley-Wroe will spend the rest of her life in prison for the death of her infant daughter. A judge in Midland, Texas, sentenced the 24-year-old on Friday to life without the possibility of parole. She was found guilty on one count of capital murder of a child under 10 years old.
The baby died on May 11, 2022, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Medical records attributed the cause of death to severe head trauma. Investigators noted that the infant had two fractures in the back of her skull. Authorities stated that the injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma. Medical experts compared the force required to cause the damage to that of a fall from a two-story building.
Detectives reviewed Gilley-Wroe’s phone and found Google searches that supported the case against her. While in custody, she made statements to a cellmate. She said she threw the baby against the wall and struck the girl until the crying stopped. Gilley-Wroe was the only person alone with the child during the window in which the crime occurred.
During the trial, Gilley-Wroe argued that the injuries might have been caused by her aunt, the baby’s father, or her dog. The jury rejected that defense. They voted to convict her on the capital murder charge.
The sentencing concluded the legal process for a case that began in 2022. Gilley-Wroe is now in state custody. The case highlights the severity of the penalties for infant homicide in Texas.
