Andrew Garfield has publicly contested a memory shared by Sam Altman regarding a brief encounter during the production of the biographical film 'Artificial.' The two men offer conflicting accounts of whether they waved to one another while cameras were rolling near Altman's residence. This disagreement has emerged as the movie prepares for its theatrical release.
Altman first described the moment in an interview with Vanity Fair. He recounted walking down the street to buy coffee one morning and spotting a film set. According to Altman, he saw a man dressed identically to himself, carrying the same backpack. He said the experience felt like a glitch in the simulation until he recognized the actor portraying him.
Garfield addressed the story in a recent conversation with GQ. The actor said he was confused by Altman's recollection and replayed the interview several times to understand the details. Garfield insisted that he had no direct contact with Altman during that period. He stated that he had never seen the OpenAI chief in person while the production was active.
The filming took place outside Altman's house on what Garfield described as an eerie day. The production team told the cast and crew that Altman was not home. Only security personnel were present on the set. Garfield recalled seeing one security guard but did not see Altman. He suggested that Altman might have mistaken another person for him, though he admitted he did not have a definitive explanation for the mix-up.
To clear up potential confusion, Garfield noted that he did not use a body double during the production. This detail removes the possibility that a stand-in caused the visual similarity Altman described. A representative for OpenAI provided a different account to GQ. The representative stated that Altman was indeed home during the filming and maintained that he waved at Garfield.
Altman characterized the interaction as a simple wave before both men went on with their days. He found the moment strange because Garfield had captured his specific mannerisms accurately. The OpenAI chief emphasized that the exchange was a one-time occurrence. He described it as a peculiar moment to see someone portray his habits so well.
The film 'Artificial' is directed by Luca Guadagnino and is scheduled to open in theaters on Christmas Day. Neon will distribute the movie. The story focuses on the turbulent period in 2023 when Altman was briefly fired from OpenAI and then rehired. The plot explores the internal dynamics and external pressures surrounding the company during that year.
The cast includes Ike Barinholtz, who portrays co-founder Elon Musk. Monica Barbaro plays former CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov takes on the role of former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. Mark Rylance also appears in the film, playing Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton. The narrative depicts the high-stakes environment of the AI giant.
Both Garfield and Altman agree that the production was filmed outside Altman's home. Their recollections differ only on the specific interaction. The actor insists he was not present for the wave, while the executive remembers the exchange. This minor disagreement adds a layer of behind-the-scenes intrigue to the film's release.
