Cleveland Browns: Jared Verse explains locker room friction after Pittsburgh loss
The defensive end says he underestimated how his pre-game remarks would land with teammates following a road defeat.

Jared Verse lost his composure on the field, but the real conflict happened in the locker room.
The 26 year old defensive end told reporters on Wednesday that he has talked with his squadmates about their reaction to his words before and during Sunday's game in Pittsburgh. The Browns fell to the Steelers in that contest, a result that followed Verse's aggressive pre-game messaging. He admitted he did not fully prepare his teammates for the specific way he engaged with the Steelers and their fans.
The tension surfaced during a point-after try attempt when Steelers guard Mason McCormick slammed a leaping Verse to the ground. Officials called a penalty for sweeping the legs. Verse said he felt a sharp sting because he viewed his teammates as brothers. He noted that a similar play had hit teammate Derek Barnett on the next field goal, and the repetition broke his composure. He believed his teammates should have reacted more visibly to protect him.
Verse acknowledged that his pre-game declaration that the Browns planned to make Pittsburgh theirs set the stage for the friction. He felt he should have communicated his intentions earlier to avoid putting the group in an awkward spot. He described his natural tendency to be vocal in his play, talk, and movement. He said that if people have not figured out that trait yet, it is simply who he is.
Head coach Todd Monken addressed the incident on Monday. He told the players they needed to speak with their play rather than relying on verbal exchanges. Verse accepted that coaching perspective while maintaining that his style is inherent to his game. He concluded that the team needs to improve its performance moving forward.
The Browns will face their next opponent soon. Verse's openness about the incident shows he wants the group to move past the friction. The focus now shifts to how the defense executes on the field.
