The Cleveland Browns have shifted their quarterback depth chart for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. Shedeur Sanders will start at the position for the first time this season, while veteran Deshaun Watson remains on the sideline.
Coach Todd Monken announced the decision on Friday. He explained that Watson has been in the concussion protocol all week and missed all three team practices. Although Watson could receive medical clearance on Saturday, the Browns plan to keep him out regardless of that outcome.
Monken cited Sanders' performance in practice as the primary reason for the change. The head coach noted that the 24-year-old quarterback showed comfort in managing the huddle and operated with confidence. "I liked his confidence and the way he operated," Monken said. "He looked very comfortable in terms of getting our guys in and out of the huddle and I thought he threw the ball extremely well."
Watson entered the concussion protocol on Monday night after experiencing symptoms. He had previously returned to action after a similar evaluation last week, where an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant cleared him. In that previous instance, Sanders replaced Watson for four plays, completing two passes for two yards.
Sanders finished his rookie season last year by starting the final seven games. He went 3-4 during that stretch, completing 56.2% of his passes for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The Browns held a competition for the starting job during training camp, but Watson won the initial decision.
Sanders credited that previous playing time for his current readiness. He told reporters that the repetitions allowed him to tap into his previous experience. "That’s why I’m thankful for this whole offseason and everything and just being out there with the guys each and every day," Sanders said. "So I don’t think we lost a step."
The Browns enter Sunday's contest with a 5-3 record and are trying to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this season. Their opponent, the New Orleans Saints, holds a 2-5 record after a bye week. New Orleans ranks 28th in the league in total defense and 23rd against the pass.
