Los Angeles County Fire Department stations will give away free sandbags to residents starting this weekend.
The department is holding a series of distribution events between Saturday and November 28. These events are scheduled in response to a severe El Niño weather event that forecasters expect will bring heavy rain to Southern California this winter. Residents can receive up to 25 pre-filled sandbags at 11 designated locations throughout the county.
Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated that preparation begins before emergencies occur. He noted that small steps go a long way in ensuring family safety. Marrone described sandbags as highly effective and simple tools that help redirect flooding, mud, and debris flow away from properties.
