Elon Musk announced on X on Friday that Tesla will cease manufacturing the Cybertruck at its Texas facility by mid-2027. The CEO stated the decision is necessary to clear space for higher volumes of Cybercab production, the company’s upcoming autonomous taxi service.

The pickup truck, introduced in 2019, was marketed with a boxy, futuristic design. Tesla promoted the vehicle as a durable option capable of towing 14,000 pounds and resisting damage from sledgehammers and firearms. Despite these claims, the car has faced multiple recalls and ongoing quality issues.

Sales figures from Kelley Blue Book show a sharp decline in demand. Tesla sold only a fraction of the units it predicted, with 2025 sales dropping from 38,965 in the prior year. Musk had forecasted annual sales of 250,000 units after commercial production began in 2023. The vehicle’s initial price point was $60,990.

The Texas gigafactory is currently the only site producing the Cybertruck. It appears unlikely that other Tesla plants will take over production. The truck also became a political symbol during Musk’s tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency, with some owners protesting by driving their vehicles past Tesla dealerships.

The announcement marks a shift in Tesla’s manufacturing priorities. The company is moving resources away from the pickup to focus on its self-driving fleet. Musk confirmed the timeline for the transition, placing the end of Cybertruck assembly in the middle of next year.
